Fen-Bay Services Ltd has grown to become one of the leading providers of loading bay equipment, Industrial doors, Gates and Barriers throughout the UK and Ireland providing innovative and eco-efficient solutions.
Reporting directly to the board, the Compliance and Engineering Standards Manager will be responsible for understanding, applying and maintaining regulatory compliance of the full range of FBS supplied equipment; this includes equipment types supplied as a reseller and those manufactured within the Hörmann/FBS group.
The applicant will be able to demonstrate knowledge of compliance matters in a similar engineering environment and should have a working knowledge of the Machinery Directive (or SI 2008/1597 – The Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008).
Additional applicable regulations are listed below but those unfamiliar with these will be considered, as the successful applicant will be mentored and supported into the role by the current incumbent over a 3-6 month period.
Engineering and Product Compliance
o BS EN 1570 – Lifting Tables
o BS EN 1398 – Dock Levellers
o BS EN 12453 – Gates/Doors Testing
o BS7671:2018 – IET Wiring Regulations
o SI 2008/1597 – Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008
o DHF TS 019 – Gates
o DHF TS 012 – Doors
In addition, the applicant must show a strong grasp of engineering standards and design practices with the ability to determine when standards are appropriate and correctly adhered to across a range of projects, offering guidance and technical support to operations managers throughout the business.
Applicants should hold a BEng in either a mechanical or electrical discipline and be registered (or working towards registration) as an Incorporated Engineer. Holders of HNC/D Engineering with appropriate experience will also be considered.
Whilst experience within the loading bay and Industrial Door industry will be significantly advantageous, engineers with other backgrounds will be considered where sufficient crossover of the core engineering competencies of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems can be shown.
The role demands excellent communication skills, IT competency and the strength of character to outline compliance requirements articulately and accurately and explain how they can be met to customers (and others) who may disagree or lack sufficient understanding of the intricacies involved; this must be undertaken with commercial sensitivity and levels of tact that will not create undue tension or customer dissatisfaction. Underpinning this will be a clear understanding of the need to deliver equipment and installations that are safe, compliant and commercially viable.
This position would suit an aspirational engineer who is seeking a challenging, diverse and critical management role in a successful, growing business. They will have the ability to influence others without appearing authoritarian or overbearing. Credibility is key to the role alongside a strong team ethos – the post holder will become the “go-to” person for all matters related to engineering and compliance and must develop the self-confidence (underpinned with regulatory knowledge) to deal with questions and concerns related to the full range of equipment FBS offer.
